Menindee Sunset
I nearly missed it. Sitting at the Burke and Wills Campsite near Menindee, I happened to glance up—and the sky had erupted in amazing colour. One moment it was an ordinary sunset, the next it was a full‑blown spectacle, the kind of colours that feel almost unreal.
There was no chance of reaching the lake’s edge on foot in time; the best vantage point was too far, and the light was changing by the second. Instinct kicked in. I grabbed the drone and sent it climbing above the treetops, angling it toward the lake as fast as I could.
Just as the colours reached their peak—fiery reds, streaks of orange stretching across the sky—the drone arrived in position. I managed to capture this moment right on the edge of fading light, a scene I would have completely missed if I’d looked up only a minute later.
