Algebuckina Waterhole

There are places in the Australian outback that you can stand beside and still not truly see. Algebuckina Waterhole is one of them — from the ground, the waterhole reveals little of itself. It took a drone at 7:38 in the morning, with the sun just breaking the horizon, to show what it actually is: a thin, winding ribbon of water moving quietly through one of the most vast and unforgiving landscapes on earth.

The waterhole sits on Anna Creek Station — the largest cattle station in the world — midway along the Oodnadatta Track, the legendary 620-kilometre unsealed road that threads through outback South Australia, between William Creek and Oodnadatta. It is genuinely remote country, and the photograph doesn’t soften that. The plain stretches in every direction without apology, the scrub sparse and low, the horizon impossibly wide.

What the sunrise brings is colour that has no business being that vivid in a landscape that dry — deep crimson at the horizon, the sun burning through a bank of cloud, the sky shifting through pink and steel-blue above it. The waterhole catches just enough of that light to hold its place in the frame.

This is a photograph for anyone who has driven the Track, or who has always meant to. It’s also simply one of those images that makes a room feel larger than it is.
