Description

Ibis Island

Photographed from the air over Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre in late May 2025 during a significant flood event, Ibis Island captures a small island of ochre lake bed earth surrounded by the still, shallow floodwater that had spread across the vast salt lake. The aerial perspective compresses sky and water into a near-seamless field of blue, with the island — pale gold and precisely centred — as the sole point of reference in an otherwise borderless expanse. The horizon is barely visible, the water so still and so wide that lake and sky become almost indistinguishable, separated only by the faintest line where colour shifts by a fraction of a tone.

Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre fills rarely, sometimes only once in a decade, and the conditions that produced this image — calm water, clear light and an island holding its shape against the flood — belong to a specific and unrepeatable moment in the lake’s cycle. The image’s extreme minimalism and tonal restraint set it apart from more conventional aerial landscape photography, reducing the scene to colour, scale and a single small anchor point around which the entire composition organises itself. It is a photograph that asks little of the viewer at first glance and rewards patient attention with a growing sense of the scene’s actual vastness.

As a fine art print, Ibis Island is a natural choice for large-format display, where the full scale of the composition and the subtlety of its tonal gradations can be properly appreciated. Its restrained blue and gold palette suits contemporary, coastal and minimalist interiors alike, working equally well as a quiet accent piece or as the sole focal point of a room. At larger sizes, the island’s texture and the faint variation across the surrounding water reward slow, considered viewing.
