Description

Middle Belougerie Flats

Middle Belougerie Flats sits within the wide valley floor of Warrumbungle National Park, framed by the layered volcanic ridgelines the park is known for. This photograph was made in April, early in the morning, when low-angle light had begun to strike the near slope of the valley while the deeper ranges behind remained in soft, blue-toned shadow. The result is a landscape rendered in distinct planes of light — a sunlit band of eucalypt canopy catching vivid green, set against darker, cooler forest climbing the mountains beyond. In the foreground, a mob of eastern grey kangaroos moves quietly through the golden, sun-cured grass of the flats.

The composition of Middle Belougerie Flats relies on this contrast in light and depth. The mountains rise in overlapping silhouettes, their scale conveyed through the gradual cooling of tone from front to back. A tree line breaks the valley floor from the slopes above, individual eucalypts lit brightly where the morning sun reaches them, their canopies a saturated green against the muted grass below. The kangaroos, small within the frame, animate what would otherwise be a still landscape — their presence a quiet reminder of the valley as a living, grazed environment rather than an empty vista.

The palette moves from warm gold in the foreground grass through vivid green in the mid-ground trees to deep blue-grey in the distant ranges — a natural gradient produced entirely by the angle of early light across varied terrain. It’s a scene that depends on timing: the same valley at midday would lose this layered depth entirely.

As a print, Middle Belougerie Flats suits buyers with a connection to the Warrumbungles, or an appreciation for the quiet detail of native wildlife within a broader landscape. The wide format works well above furniture in living spaces, and its natural, earthy palette pairs easily with timber and neutral interiors. Displayed at large scale, the individual kangaroos and the texture of the valley’s grasslands reward a closer look, while the layered mountains carry the composition from across a room.
