Description

Sand Ridges

Photographed from the air over Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre in late May 2025 during a significant flood event, Sand Ridges captures the lake bed in intimate aerial detail — a pale, almost monochromatic expanse of white and blush-pink salt and sand, interrupted by a single sinuous crack running diagonally across the frame. The crack exposes a faint line of ochre beneath the surface crust, evidence of the sediment layers beneath, while the subtle undulation of the surrounding surface catches the light in gentle tonal variations that give the image an unexpected softness and depth. The photograph was made without a door on the aircraft to maximise image clarity, in cold outback air at altitude.

Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre fills rarely — sometimes decades separate significant flood events — and the surface conditions that produced this image are transient by nature, existing only in the brief window between inundation and evaporation. The overhead perspective removes all familiar points of reference, leaving a composition governed entirely by the organic curve of the crack and the gentle undulation of the sand ridges around it. What might easily be mistaken for a minimalist painting is in fact a precise documentary record of one of Australia’s most extraordinary geological environments at one of its rarest moments — a fact that gives the image both aesthetic and historical weight.

As a fine art print, Sand Ridges is ideally suited to spaces where tonal restraint and quiet visual complexity are valued — bedrooms, studies, contemporary living rooms and any interior where a near-monochromatic palette in white, blush and warm gold would complement rather than compete with the surrounding environment. The image’s almost painterly quality means it sits as naturally alongside abstract art as it does alongside landscape photography. At larger print sizes, the texture of the salt crust surface and the fine detail of the crack’s irregular edges become the centrepiece of the wall — a print that invites close inspection and rewards it.
