Sunrise at Norah Head Lighthouse

Norah Head Lighthouse has stood on its rocky headland since 1903, and on clear winter mornings, the pre-dawn sky above the Central Coast of NSW can ignite in ways that make the structure feel less like a navigational aid and more like a focal point placed there by design. This photograph was made in June, in the minutes before sunrise, when the eastern horizon had begun to burn orange and deep crimson while the upper sky still held the cool darkness of night. The lighthouse beacon glows against the gradient, active and luminous.

The composition places the lighthouse to the left of frame, its silhouette and the rocky headland forming a dark anchor against the colour above. The ocean occupies the lower third — calm, glassy, and reflecting a faint trace of the horizon light. Layered cloud formations stretch across the sky in broad horizontal bands, lit from below in amber and gold, deepening to purple and near-black toward the top of the frame. The 2:5 aspect ratio gives the image generous vertical space, allowing the full drama of the cloud layers to read from the glowing horizon to the darkened sky above.
