Description
Warburton River Inlet
Photographed from the air over the northern reaches of Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre in late May 2025 during a significant flood event, Warburton River Inlet captures the point where the Warburton River delta meets the filling lake — a deep blue body of floodwater curving against the warm ochre and gold of the surrounding desert country, with the pale expanse of the salt pan stretching to the horizon beyond.
The braided channels and low desert scrub of the delta floor fill the foreground in intricate detail, giving the wide panoramic frame a richness of texture that rewards large-format printing. The colour contrast between the warm earth tones of the delta and the cool silver-blue of the open lake beyond is striking from any viewing distance.
Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre fills rarely and unpredictably — sometimes decades pass between significant flood events — and this image documents one of those rare moments from a perspective that very few people will ever experience in person. The aerial vantage point reveals the full drama of the delta’s meeting with the lake: the way the floodwater has claimed the landscape incrementally, leaving behind a boundary of extraordinary visual complexity. For anyone drawn to the remote interior of Australia, or to landscape photography that documents places and moments beyond the reach of ordinary travel, this is a print of genuine rarity and significance.
