Description

Windmill in Canola

Photographed on a September afternoon near Young in the NSW Central West, Windmill in Canola places a rusted steel windmill at the centre of a canola field in full bloom — a solid, weathered form rising from an unbroken expanse of vivid yellow that fills the frame from foreground to horizon. The windmill’s steel tower shows the deep rust of age and exposure, its vanes still intact and turned slightly to face the wind, while the canola presses in on all sides in a colour so saturated it reads almost as light rather than pigment. A bare, skeletal tree stands on the ridgeline in the upper right, its stark silhouette a quiet but effective counterpoint to the abundance below.

The portrait format suits the subject precisely — the vertical emphasis of the windmill structure against the horizontal sweep of the crop gives the composition a strong internal tension, while the blue sky and cloud above the ridgeline provide tonal relief from the intensity of the yellow below. Young’s canola season runs for only a few weeks each spring, and the combination of a clear afternoon, a crop at its peak and a windmill in the right position makes this an image that required both timing and circumstance to produce.

As a fine art print, Windmill in Canola makes an immediate and lasting impression — the saturated yellow commands attention from across a room, while the detail of the rusted ironwork and the lone tree reward closer viewing. It suits living rooms, dining spaces and any interior where bold colour, strong composition and a distinctly Australian agricultural character are the aim. Displayed at large format, the depth of the canola field and the texture of the windmill structure fully justify the scale.
